How to identify a London Doorway

London Doorways can be identified by their triple-arch design.

A hand-drawn sketch of the important aspects that define a London Doorway. The features include a segmented arch across the top, symmetrical spandrels on either side of the arched transom, and symmetrical arched sidelights below the spandrels.

Many London Doorways retain their original door, however some have been replaced. All of the London Doorways identified to date are single leaf doorways.

More than half of the known London Doorways are on buff brick buildings, typically in residential buildings demonstrating influences of the Italianate architectural style. There are no confirmed London Doorways on purpose-built commercial buildings, although some residential properties featuring London Doorways have been adapted to commercial uses.

London Doorways can be found on almost any type of home – from the finest architect-designed heritage mansions to the most humble worker’s cottage.
